PaperLab or Zotero: which one do you need?

They do different jobs, and many researchers will want both. Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager: it collects sources from the browser, stores their metadata, and inserts citations and bibliographies into Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs. PaperLab is a free, open-source reading tool: notes anchored to the passage they came from, answers from a local or cloud model that cite the page, and a graph of how your papers connect.

Choose Zotero when

  • You are writing and need citations and a bibliography in a citation style.
  • You collect sources from many websites and want them in one place, synced.

Choose PaperLab when

  • You read deeply and want notes that lead back to the passage.
  • You want to ask papers questions privately, and check every answer against the page.
  • You want to see how the papers in a project connect, through citations and co-citation.

Both projects are open source. Zotero has served researchers since 2006; PaperLab is new and focuses on reading.

Questions people ask

Is PaperLab a Zotero replacement?

No. PaperLab doesn’t insert citations into a document or format bibliographies, which is where Zotero shines. Use Zotero to collect and cite, and PaperLab to read and think.

Does Zotero have AI features?

Zotero itself focuses on reference management; AI features come from third-party plugins. PaperLab builds cited answers into the reader, and keeps AI text labelled and apart from your own notes.

Are both free and open source?

Yes. Zotero is free and open source, with optional paid storage for syncing. PaperLab is free and open source under Apache-2.0 and runs on your computer.

Help PaperLab reach the next researcher

PaperLab is free, open source and built by one person. A star helps other researchers find it and puts each new release in your GitHub feed. The PaperLab page on LinkedIn posts a weekly breakdown of how one feature works.
