Install PaperLab in two steps

  1. Install Docker Desktop and open it once

PaperLab runs its database and search in Docker. OrbStack, Colima and Rancher Desktop work too. On Linux, install Docker from docker.com rather than the Snap package.

  2. Download PaperLab for your system and open it

    Get the latest release

    SystemFile
    macOS with Apple siliconPaperLab-<version>-arm64.dmg
    macOS with an Intel processorPaperLab-<version>-x64.dmg
    WindowsPaperLab-<version>-x64.exe
    LinuxPaperLab-<version>-x86_64.AppImage or PaperLab-<version>-amd64.deb

The first launch downloads PaperLab itself (about 335 MB) and opens it in its own window. A short setup offers a chat model and a search model. Both are optional: reading, highlighting and notes need neither.

The first launch asks for permission

PaperLab isn't signed yet, so your system asks before the first launch and after each update.

  • macOS: open PaperLab and close the warning, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  • Windows: on “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway.
  • Linux: run chmod +x PaperLab-*.AppImage and start it. If it doesn't start, install the .deb instead.

Without the app

With Docker Compose 2.24 or later, two commands install the same release, with no clone and no build:

VERSION=0.3.0   # the latest release's number
curl -L "https://github.com/khannoussi-malek/PaperLab/releases/download/v$VERSION/paperlab-$VERSION.tar.gz" | tar xz
cd paperlab && docker compose up -d # then open http://127.0.0.1:5190

Updating, backups and building from source are in the README's Quick start.

Help PaperLab reach the next researcher

PaperLab is free, open source and built by one person. A star helps other researchers find it and puts each new release in your GitHub feed. The PaperLab page on LinkedIn posts a weekly breakdown of how one feature works.
